FSI Receives ISO 14001 Environmental Certification
MINNEAPOLIS (February 20, 2003) -- FSI International Inc.
(Nasdaq: FSII) today announced it has received a certificate
of registration from BSI, Inc. for its ISO 14001 environmental
management system. FSI became registered to emphasize its ongoing
commitment to the preservation and protection of the environment,
and to support its existing environmental health and safety
initiatives.
ISO 14001 is an internationally recognized environmental management
standard that empowers organizations to address the environmental
impact of activities,
services and processes. The standard then provides a framework for enterprises
to take steps to identify issues significant to them and implement environmental
management programs to achieve improved performance. Registration with ISO 14001
allows companies to reaffirm that environmental processes are essential components
of their business strategy.
“FSI has a long history of environmentally-friendly practices and an R&D
program that actively seeks out ways to operate more efficiently. We believe
that ISO 14001 registration is simply part of being a responsible corporate
citizen,” said Don Mitchell, president and CEO of FSI. “We are committed
to protecting the health and safety of our employees, as well as the environment
in which both FSI and our customers operate, and we have implemented an environmental
management system that emphasizes our dedication to resource conservation.”
FSI adopted an enterprise-wide approach in developing its objectives
and targets, actively engaging its employee population by
emphasizing the importance of
protecting the environment in everyday life at the workplace. Programs include
recycling,
water use, chemical handling processes and equipment design for the environment.
ISO 14001 addresses resource conservation — one of SEMI’s Global
Care™ principles. At the executive level, Mitchell was instrumental
in developing SEMI’s Global Care initiative and implementing
five environmental principles at FSI. The five principles are
Workplace Health and Safety, Resource Conservation, Product
Stewardship, Community Service and Excellence. The certification
was granted to FSI’s Chaska, Minnesota facility.
The ISO 14001 standard outlines several key requirements with
which companies must comply in order to operate in an environmentally
responsible manner. The five major elements of the environmental
management system requirements are Environmental Policy, Planning,
Implementation and Operations, Checking and Corrective Action
and Management Review. By implementing the ISO 14001 standard,
companies can achieve risk reduction, cost reductions and
increased competitive advantages. ISO 14001, which became
official in
late 1996, embraces the quality management approach of ISO
9000, an earlier standard to drive continual quality improvement.
